LJH Studio was hired to restore and reproduce original William Morris wallpaper at Lord Glasgows Castle in Largs. The dinning room wallpaper had previously been destroyed in a fire and was in need of saving. LJH studios training is in hand printed wallpaper and colour consultancy so we were the first place that Kelburn Castle approached when they required restoration and reproduction of the William Morris wallpaper. Sandersons currently own all the original wood blocks and design rights to print William Morris wallpapers however we were given special allowances to recreate the design. William Morris’s designs were created during the Arts and Craft movement back in late 1800’s. However the Acanthus design that the castle needed restored and reproduced was lost in a fire at the William Morris factory in the 1900’s and so they required LJH Studio to come to the castle and hand trace the design from the undamaged wallpaper in the dining room. As well as tracing the design we also had to hand mix colours on site to match the existing colours of the wallpaper. The traces and colour samples were then taken back to the studios screen printing studio and worked on to produce a repeating design that could be hand screen printed onto 10 meter rolls of blank wallpaper.

LJH Studio was commissioned twice by The Abbotsford Trust. On the first occasion we were asked to design a formal dinning set and on the second to design artwork for the Abbotsford restaurant. Both projects were inspired by the life and works of Sir Walter Scott and his beloved home Abbotsford House which is situated in the Scottish borders. The last person to have commissioned a dinner set at Abbotsford House was Sir Walter Scott himself and so it was a true honour to be commissioned to design the new set. It was also a royal honour for the studio as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was served her lunch on the dinning set at the royal opening. The artwork that was created for the restaurant was a collection of four large screen prints showing the changes in the seasons at Abbotsford House.
